From a religiously non religious point of view...

Saw some newscasts from the mid-east regions about the discussions of how Islam, as viewed by some, should deal with the west.

Essentially, there is a view that states it's the governments who will be dealt with that will not allow for Islam to be promoted.

This idea comes from the tradition of Islam as the protector of rights of an individual against the state. However it requires the state enforce an establishment of religion. That isn't the model in our system. We have both freedom of and from religion.

A scholarly view from a traditional Muslim.

"The threats that differences of religious opinion pose to the state can be defended against by guaranteeing the free exercise of religion, but the threats that the state poses to the understanding of religion by its establishment have no defense."
Imad-ad-Dean Ahmad, Ph.D. Minaret of Freedom Institute

This particular scholar gives both scriptural and traditional/ historical examples of the proposition that, indeed, establishment is not in the interests of the Muslim.

His conclusion? That the American system is a Muslims best bet for a governmental structure.
"Establishment of a state religion opens the door to the politicization of religion. The art of politics is coercive by definition."

Wouldn't the founding fathers be pleased.

Autumn Haiku Series

the early autumn
nearest the open evening
a breeze a whisper

light touches the sun
as shadow becomes a gauze
colouring evening

three shimmers water
now black in a reflection
lit gentle ripples

a soft nudge whispers
hints of illumination
an autumn gentle

a three light autumn
an evenings night chorus
made with only light

A Saturday Oasis

A Saturday oasis

owls and crickets murmur
with the frogs and geese calls
a gentle desert breeze across a star covered sky
with a modern man made lake softly lit
by lighting that shimmers over an unlikely life

a June high dessert early morning sweetened
by air from a day heated conifer feeding
from whose deeply fissured barks that add
surface character to tan colored sand
otherwise so flat and opened to that distant mountain magic

a junipernus fragrance of a leaf
whispering with the breeze and morning calls
as dawn squeezes night out and the day sneaks in

the Sunday sun glows
to the announcing distance of wheels
droning to even more distant trains

suddenly the morning creatures begin a chorus
to the welcoming light
that once quiet and dark
painting those shadows colors of morning
now painted by the glowing light from the east

the dry water color
settles by the gentle lights of man
and the shimmering water he treasures
a cool breeze of a desert morning in June
the new Sunday of a Saturday oasis
